They are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies (tools, dirt etc) and moisture.
The P protection level is composed of two numbers. The first number indicates the level of dust resistance and protection against foreign objects. The second number indicates the degree of airtightness against moisture and water.
The industry standard "Test Method" divides the enclosure protection level into three levels of A, B, and C, of which the C level has the highest requirements. Indoor level A is not lower than IP20, level B is not lower than | P30, level C is not lower than | P31; outdoor screen level A is not lower than P33, level B is not lower than | P54, level C is not lower than | P66.
